Pull a piece of text out with Run Regex

Use the Run Regex tool to extract part of a value with a pattern, or let the app write the pattern for you. It is free.

Written by Umer Ishaq

Run Regex extracts part of a value using a pattern. The tool is marked Free.

How do I add it?

  1. Click Add column, then open the Tools tab.

  2. Under Transform, click Run Regex ("Extract or test a pattern").

  3. In Data to evaluate, type @ or / and pick the column to read.

  4. In Regex Pattern (Advanced), type the pattern. The hint shows (?<email>[\w.-]+@[\w.-]+\.[A-Za-z]{2,}).

  5. Click Add column and run 3 rows (the number is your row count).

The Tools tab of the Add column panel. The Transform group lists Formula, Run Regex, Merge columns, Normalize Domain, Normalize Company Name, Normalize Location, Infer Email Pattern and Read File, each with a Free badge or a price, and the Score and route group starts below. The Run Regex row is outlined in red.

Until a pattern is entered the footer says "Regex pattern is required."

Can the app write the pattern?

Yes. In the box at the top ("Describe what you want to extract in plain text"), say what you want, for example email addresses or phone numbers, and click Generate RegEx.

Example

With a column holding acme.example, globex.example and initech.example, the pattern (?<site>[a-z]+)\.example returned acme, globex and initech in a new column called Run Regex.

Good to know

  • The tool does not spend from your wallet.

  • Run Regex computes on its own whether the table's Auto-run is Off or On. Its header shows a check icon.

  • The Edit column panel of a Run Regex column has only a Configuration section and a Save button. It has no Run Settings, no Auto-run switch and no run condition.
