Function, team pack, template or Loopgent: which one should I use?

Functions, team packs, templates and Loopgents are all ways to reuse work you have already done. This article compares them using the words the app shows.

What is the difference at a glance?

The quoted text below is the app's own wording, so you can match it to what you see on screen.

  • Function: the Save as function window says: "Any table can then run these steps as a single column. Columns your selection uses but does not include become the function's inputs, supplied per row by whoever calls it." The page where you add a function says editing it updates every table that calls it.

  • Team pack: the Save as team pack window says: "Save selected columns so your team can apply this setup to any table. Missing inputs are created as blank columns or bound to existing ones by name."

  • Template: the Share window says: "Turn this table into a template and share with others. (current version of the table will be copied)." The Templates page has Loopster Templates and Workspace Templates.

  • Loopgent: the tooltip on Save as Loopgent says: "Turn this column's prompt into a reusable Loopgent (mentions become mapped inputs)". Once a column uses a saved Loopgent, its Edit column panel says: "Edits to that Loopgent apply to every column using it."

Where do I start each one?

  • Function: click a column's header, then choose Save as function.

  • Team pack: click a column's header, then choose Save as team pack.

  • Template: open More table options, choose Share, then click Turn into template.

  • Loopgent: click an AI column's header, choose Edit column, then click Save as Loopgent next to Custom prompt.

A column header menu open under the Company profile column header, listing Rename column, Edit column, Insert 1 column left, Insert 1 column right, Run column, Duplicate, Save as function, Save as team pack, Filter on this column, Hide, Clear column and Delete column. The Save as team pack item is outlined in red.

The More table options menu open under the toolbar, listing View: Live, Row height: 1 line, Dedupe, Dep Graph, Export and Share, with a panel below it headed Share table via URL or Template. The panel has two buttons, Share table URL and Turn into template, and the Turn into template button is outlined in red.

Where do I find each one again?

The Add column panel open on the For you tab, with a search box and the tabs For you, Import, Enrich, Tools, Functions and Export. Below is a Build with AI box, then the Suggested, Favorites, Recent and Packs tabs, with the Packs tab outlined in red, and the start of the suggestions list.

The Use AI panel on the Generate tab with a Use a saved Loopgent list showing the Loopgents Company summary and Use AI and a Browse Loopgents link. The Company summary card is outlined in red.

Which one should I pick?

  • Pick a function when several columns always run together and you want them as one column. Editing the function updates every table that calls it.

  • Pick a team pack when you want your team to apply the same column setup to any table.

  • Pick a template when you want to start from a ready-made table, or share one of your own.

  • Pick a Loopgent when what you want to reuse is an AI column's prompt. A column that uses a Loopgent takes its prompt, model, tools and depth from it.

Good to know

  • The word Loopgent also shows up on a plain Use AI column, even if you never save one. On the Configure tab, the block at the top is labelled Loopgent, and its menu says Custom prompt until you pick a saved one. Under Use case, the panel says: "Loopgent runs strictly on provided input cells, without internet access."

  • The Save as function window and the Save as team pack window do not mention cost or re-running. Check a paid column's price in the Run column dialog before you run it. See Run columns safely: Auto-run, test one row, then run the rest.

  • A function and a team pack are both saved from a column's header menu, so check which one you click: Save as function or Save as team pack.
