I changed my AI prompt but nothing changed: what re-runs and what costs

Saving a new prompt on a Text/Data AI column does not re-run its cells, and this article shows what does re-run and where to see what it cost.

Does editing a prompt re-run my cells?

No. On a Text/Data AI column that uses its own Custom prompt, saving an edited prompt re-runs nothing and charges nothing in all three cases:

  • Auto-run is Off.

  • Auto-run is On, with Keep existing results ticked.

  • Auto-run is On, with Keep existing results unticked.

The cells keep their old answers. Nothing marks them as out of date: no icon on a cell or a column header. Re-run the column to update them.

How do I get new answers?

Run the cells yourself. Pick the way that fits:

  • One row: click the play button in the row number area. It runs at once, with no dialog.

  • One cell: double-click the cell, then click Re-run this cell.

  • Only the empty cells: click the play button on the column header, then choose Run all N empty rows.

  • Every cell, replacing the answers: click the play button on the column header, then choose Overwrite all N rows. The dialog describes it as "Re-run every row, overwriting completed cells".

A table with an AI column called What they do and the details of one AI cell open over it. The details show the answer text, then a Re-run this cell button outlined in red, a Lock cell option, Loopgent Depth, Loopgent Trace, Amount Spent with a small dollar amount, Confidence and a Justification section.

The Run column dialog shows an Expected cost line under each button on an AI column. Read it before you choose, because a re-run is charged again. See Run columns safely: Auto-run, test one row, then run the rest.

The Run column dialog with a purple Run all 4 empty rows button and a red Overwrite all 5 rows button. Each has an Expected cost line of about one cent and a short description. The Expected cost line under Overwrite all 5 rows is outlined in red.

In the Edit column panel, the main button reads Save and run N rows when some cells are empty, with an arrow next to it. When every cell already has an answer, it reads just Save. Check the label before you click.

What happens when an input changes?

That depends on the table's Auto-run switch, at the top left of the toolbar. Click it to see its state. Keep existing results is in the same popover, and in Run settings in Table settings. It only shows while Auto-run is On. See Table settings: Auto-run, scheduled reruns and deduplication.

The Auto-run popover opened from the toolbar, with the switch on. Below the switch, the ticked Keep existing results box and its explanation are outlined in red.

Each column also has its own Auto-run switch under Run Settings. With the table's Auto-run on and a column's own switch off, the panel says: "Auto-run is off. Manual runs still work."

Switching Auto-run on does not run anything and shows no cost dialog.

  • Off: the app says "New rows and values will not run on their own — trigger them from a column or row. Cells already queued still run."

  • On, Keep existing results ticked: the app says "Only errored, empty and new cells run. A completed answer is left alone even when one of its inputs changes." On an enrichment column (not an AI column), a changed input leaves the finished answer alone and nothing is charged again.

  • On, Keep existing results unticked: the app says "Changing an input re-runs the columns below it and replaces their answers — which is billed again for those rows." When you change a value in the column the AI column reads, the AI cell on that row re-runs by itself and is charged again. The other rows do not run.

  • On, a new row: adding an empty row runs nothing. Typing a value in the new row, in the column the AI column reads, runs the AI cell for that row, with the latest saved prompt. Only that row runs.

What happens to columns that read the column I re-run?

Take an enrichment column (Normalize Company Name), not an AI column. Two columns read it: a free Formula column and a second, paid Normalize Company Name column. In our tests:

  • The free Formula column followed the new values. It did not need a run.

  • With Auto-run Off, Overwrite all N rows on the first column re-ran only that column. The paid column that reads it did not run, and the dialog did not mention it.

  • With Auto-run On and Keep existing results ticked, the paid column did not run, because it already had an answer.

  • With Auto-run On and Keep existing results unticked, the paid column re-ran for every row and was billed again.

Troubleshooting

I saved a new prompt and the old answers are still there

What you see: You edited an AI column's prompt and clicked Save. The cells still show the earlier answers, and nothing looks out of date.

Why it happens: On a Text/Data column, saving a prompt does not run any cell, with Auto-run off or on. The cells are not marked as out of date.

What to do: Run the cells again. Click the play button on the column header and choose Overwrite all N rows, or open one cell and click Re-run this cell. Read the Expected cost line first. See Use AI columns and AI web research.

I do not see a charge for the re-run

What you see: You re-ran a cell or a column and the wallet balance looks the same. Or Amount Spent in the cell shows only one amount.

Why it happens: A paid re-run is charged again, but three things make it easy to miss:

  • Amount Spent shows the latest run only, not a running total.

  • The wallet button shows whole cents only.

  • Each run is its own line in Usage history, and nothing on the line says it was a re-run.

What to do: Click History at the bottom right of the table, then Usage history. It opens the Usage page in Settings, filtered to this table. Look for new lines for your column at the time of your re-run. See Table options: row height, dependency graph, export, share and history.

The History menu open above the History button at the bottom right of a table. Under the heading Table history it lists Usage history (What this table spent, and on what), Change log, All configuration versions and Restore data. The Usage history item is outlined in red.

Good to know

  • Re-run this cell on an AI cell and Overwrite all N rows on a paid enrichment column are both charged again. Each is a new line in Usage history.

  • Free tools, errors and skipped cells leave no line in Usage history.

  • In our tests, a Web Search cell that answered "Unknown" with Confidence "low" was still charged.

  • A free Formula column does not need a run. It follows the values of the column it reads.
